Each sphere represents a single carbon atom; the "connecting tubes" represent their atomic covalent bond. For our purposes, two of the spheres (those we considered critical) were enlarged for focus. The carbon atoms in graphite are strongly bonded, but only in a single plane. This means that a pinch of graphite powder is actually many layers of these bonded planes, stacked loosely atop each other. These layers easily slide over each other, which is what makes graphite an ideal lubricant. Talcum powder is similar. We chose this image to represent our methodology because technical publishing is a layer in the manufacturing process, too. Actually, several: between marketing and engineering, between engineering and production ... and, of course, between product and user. Artwork must closely tie in with writing; graphics need to fit into desktop publishing, data has to be sifted by project managers, and so on. The elements of publishing must bind tightly to work. Yet the homeowner requires a different presentation than the engineer. So it is that good publishing must also be layered to be successful.
